George Clooney is becoming well known for his humanitarian work. Clooney took a stand to help fight global poverty in countries Africa. In 2017, Clooney starred in the video called “George Clooney: Hunger Crisis 2017 – millions at risk of starvation.” This video urges Americans to donate to the Global Emergency Response Coalition, a very important campaign that is helping fight starvation in Africa, one of the worlds leading causes of poverty. This campaign is made up of eight humanitarian organizations who distribute the donations equally among each organization.
The eight organizations are CARE, International Medical Corps, International Rescue Committee, Mercy Corps, Oxfam, Plan International, Save the Children and World Vision. The money goes to the 20 million people that are in need of food in different countries around the world. It is estimated that one child dies every ten minutes from hunger starvation in these places. Clooney stated, “By giving we can inspire hope where hope is lost and make the world a better place.”
In August 2017, George Clooney and his wife Amal donated $1 million to the Southern Poverty Law Center to fight hate crimes. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a civil rights group that works to protect people from hate crimes and other extremists by exposing these activities to law enforcement for global change. The world lies in the hands of today’s young people; they are the future. That is why this organization works very hard to teach today’s youth a message of tolerance.
Organizations Founded by George Clooney
Clooney’s charitable contributions go beyond support and include co-founding a global human rights organization called Not on Our Watch with several of his co-stars from the “Ocean’s 11” franchise. Not on Our Watch helps develops campaigns and projects with the powerful voices of celebrities in order to spread the word for advocacy in international crises. It encourages governing bodies to take action, protecting the vulnerable to help bring an end to global conflicts. In February 2019, the organization merged with The Sentry in order to help prosecute war crimes and profiteers.
George Clooney and wife Amal co-founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice to help individuals that are unfairly targeted by oppressive governments through the courts, helping fight poverty by protecting innocent individuals from the injustice of oppressive regimes. It also fights to for displaced children and refugees. One recent campaign, focusing on the Syrian refugee crisis, is trying to help provide educational opportunities to Syrian children.
