A week before the G8 summit, the UK brings together a broad range of groups to focus on eliminating child malnutrition. Businessmen and women, humanitarian leaders, philanthropists and politicians came together for the “Nutrition to Growth” meeting taking place in London. Together they discussed new programs and policies that will lead the fight against child hunger. The World Food Program (WFP) is one of the many agencies attending this meeting. The WFP will be focusing on providing nutritious support for young children between conception and two years of age. This includes making sure the mothers are well fed during pregnancy and after conception when they are breastfeeding.
WFP focuses on food assistance during pregnancy and infancy to ensure the children will be able to grow to their full potential. The meeting in London will allow these leaders to discuss long-term support and policies to curb child hunger. It will focus on how organizations, governments and the public sector can work together by integrating long-term policies. The meeting will even go into depth about how scientific research can help the efforts to end child malnutrition.
Last week saw a surge in support for ending world hunger. Not only did the UK Hunger Summit meet on June 8th but also a meeting of the New Alliance Food Security and Nutrition followed it. While these meetings took place, a non-profit organization called Enough Food for Everyone IF held a public rally in Hyde Park to raise awareness about the Hunger Summit as well as world hunger in general. All of this took place before the G8 summit to encourage leaders to focus on world hunger and poverty during the summit.
