The Shawn Mendes Foundation
The foundation places an emphasis on worldwide causes such as bullying prevention, children’s healthcare access, mental health, advocating for human rights and access to education. Additionally, it inspires the younger generation by providing them with a platform to take initiative in the causes that they are passionate about. Mendes started the foundation to work alongside his fans. He has already spoken publicly about his stance on many of these issues. They often come up as recurring themes in his music, including his reference to anxiety in “In My Blood” and callous acts of violence in his song “Youth (feat. Khalid).”
The Shawn Mendes Foundation has partnered with multiple popular Canadian corporations, such as Tim Hortons, Roots Athletic Center and Flow Alkaline Spring Water to support many charities that help today’s youth. These organizations include SickKids, OneDrop, Kids In Need of Defense (KIND), Pencils of Promise and Global Citizen. Mendes’ primary mission with this foundation is to inspire the upcoming generation to reach their full potential by empowering and advocating for causes that they care deeply about.
Amidst the start of his foundation, Mendes also launched a partnership with SickKids, which is a Canadian healthcare organization. SickKids is dedicated to advancing children’s health through education, patient care and research. He personally donated to the institution $1 for each ticket sold to his show at Rogers Centre in Toronto on Sept. 6. A percentage of the proceeds from upcoming fundraisers at both Tim Hortons and Roots will also go toward a Mendes’ foundation donation at the SickKids Charitable Giving Fund.
Mendes’ Charitable Work
The launch of Mendes’ foundation is far from his first exposure to charity work. In the past, he has made generous donations to the Mexican Hurricane Relief Fund. He has also volunteered for Musicians on Call, a nonprofit that emphasizes the healing power of music. His work with Musicians on Call entails visiting the bedside of children in hospitals in both the U.S. and Canadian chapters. He has also worked with various other organizations including Pencils of Promise, which helps to rebuild schools in underprivileged countries, the Salvation Army and the Ryan Seacrest Foundation. In 2016, a school in Shia, Ghana was opened in his honor due to his fundraising and donations to the project through his work with Pencils of Promise.
In a Twitter post on the day of the foundation’s launch, Mendes released a short statement explaining the importance of the foundation, as well as highlighting his charitable efforts. “I’m so excited to announce the launch of @ShawnFoundation, to support causes that are important to my fans and our generation. I will work alongside my fans to help provide them with a platform and the means to give back and take action.”
