Sean Penn’s Charity to Sponsor Haitian Runners

Sean Penn’s Haitian charity, J/P Haitian Relief Organization, a group dedicated to stabilizing conditions in Haiti, is sponsoring five Haitian runners to compete in the New York City Marathon in November.

The idea for the sponsorship came when J/P HRO executive Ron Baldwin read a report about Astrel Clovis, a Port-au-Prince runner. In the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake there, Clovis has self-trained with “no support.” From there, Baldwin said, the organization decided to sponsor a full team. On June 2nd, tryouts for the team took place in the nation’s capital. Only ten percent of the 50 registered runners would make the cut. J/P HRO will also provide air travel, visa fees, and lodging for all qualifying participants. An additional 5 spots will be reserved for celebrities and philanthropists to raise funds for the organization.

Since the catastrophic earthquake, J/P HRO has made very impressive strides in the country. The organization medically treats 8,000 Haitians each month, provides 24/7 emergency response, and, according to the Haitian government, was instrumental in combating the country’s recent cholera epidemic. The organization also operates a primary school that has educated 500 children in need of assistance.
