SEATTLE — Celebrity couples make some of the best philanthropic teams. From actors and actresses to technology moguls, these couples represent some of the most dedicated humanitarians in the world. Here are four philanthropic power couples making a difference:
4 Philanthropic Power Couples
- Bill and Melinda Gate
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest private charity in the world, with a trust endowment of $40 billion. Bill and Melinda began the Foundation in 1997 with a mission of improving the lives of individuals in some of the poorest countries in the world. Specifically, the Foundation is focused on eradicating the health gap between rich and poor countries. Ending malaria, polio, the spreading of tuberculosis and HIV are among the top goals. Additionally, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation does tremendous work in improving international education and empowering women and girls worldwide. In the future, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will continue to change the world, as the philanthropic power couple has pledged to donate 95 percent of their wealth over time.
- David and Victoria Beckham
This husband and wife duo are philanthropic leaders in the U.K. in their dedication to global charities and causes. In 2006, David Beckham became a founding member of the Malaria No More U.K. Leadership Council (an organization founded by NGOs in partnership with UNICEF). Victoria is an outspoken supporter of the organization, wearing a mosquito ring designed by the organization to raise awareness, support and funds. David also supports the American Red Cross, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other like-minded organizations. In 2005, the soccer star was appointed UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, specifically focused on UNICEF’s Sports for Development program. In 2014, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS appointed Victoria Beckham as UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador. In addition to their involvement in charitable organizations, this philanthropic power couple has their own charity, the Victoria and David Beckham Charitable Trust, which focuses on helping children in need. Over the past decade, their contributions have made significant progress in improving the lives of children.
- Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman
The country singer and his actress wife have donated their time and money to many different global causes, with much of their focus on Australia, where they were both born. Most recently, the celebrity couple traveled to Sydney and visited Sydney Children’s Hospital in February 2019. The couple has strong relations with this hospital; in lieu of wedding presents, guests were asked to make a monetary donation to the hospital instead. Nicole Kidman has been a UNICEF goodwill ambassador since 1994 and received Australia’s highest civilian honor in 2006 by being named a Companion of the Order of Australia for her ongoing humanitarian efforts globally. The couple has repeatedly said, they “want to do [their]bit,” and support many different causes to do so. In 2018, Kidman and Urban donated $100,000 to farmers struggling in Australia due to devastating droughts in the country.
- Beyoncé and Jay Z
This musical powerhouse couple has also dedicated their lives to doing good, with both spouses deeply involved in various charities and causes. Beyoncé’s foundation, BeyGood, supports everything from unemployment to illness. In 2017, following a massive earthquake in Nepal, she focused her efforts on raising money for Nepalese victims. Additionally, Beyoncé is a fierce advocate for gender equality worldwide, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the cause. Jay Z joins his wife in charitable work, acting as one of Global Citizen’s biggest supporters. Global Citizen is an organization dedicated to eradicating extreme poverty. In 2014, 2016 and 2018, Jay Z performed at Global Citizen Festivals in New York, India and South Africa. These musicians have been giving back for decades, and each year, the duo ups the ante and makes even more positive contributions to the world.
Double the humanitarianism means double the impact. These philanthropic power couples have made tremendous contributions to organizations all sharing similar missions as The Borgen Project.
