BOURNEMOUTH, United Kingdom — Idris Elba is globally recognized for his acting talent, which has established him as one of the most respected actors of his generation. Off-camera, his contributions — alongside those of his wife, Sabrina — reflect a strong commitment to causes addressing poverty, global hunger, disadvantaged youth, health, and education. The Elbas became a member of the United Nations (U.N.) Goodwill Ambassadors for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in 2020.
IFAD Goodwill Ambassadors Supporting Farmers
As ambassadors, the Elbas advocate for investment in agricultural initiatives that support farmers across African countries. Through their efforts, they contribute to the development of a more sustainable food system, one that empowers farmers and meets the needs of consumers. They have also used their prominence to create platforms and initiatives that drive lasting change.
Small-scale farmers play a vital role in feeding the world. They produce one-third of the world’s food and more than 70% of the food produced in Africa and Asia. IFAD helps more than 160,000 farmers, and globally the organization has helped more than 512 million people since 1978. With $1.75 billion, IFAD estimates it can double its impact by 2030 and help more rural communities recover from the pandemic and rebuild their lives.
Elba said that IFAD needs more assistance to carry on the work that is necessary to keep food systems operating in rural areas to avoid needless hunger and suffering. Sabrina Elba said they will continue to champion IFAD and call on world leaders to invest in food systems and support the most vulnerable farmers.
The Elbas’ Global Campaigns and Collaborations
The couple launched Walk a Mile in My Shoes, a footwear collection in collaboration with luxury designer Christian Louboutin, created to promote social equity. The initiative blends exclusive design with a meaningful purpose, using profits from each pair sold to support efforts that address inequality and promote positive social change.
The collection generated more than €1 million in its first season, donated to several humanitarian aid charities including Gathering for Justice, BeRose, Purposeful, Immediate Theatre and the Somali Hope Foundation.
Sabrina Elba is also an ambassador for Mothers2Mothers, an initiative that provides employment opportunities for women across African nations who have been diagnosed with HIV.
Another initiative of the Elbas is the Elba Hope Foundation, an organization that supports vulnerable populations through programs focused on youth empowerment, crisis response and long-term community resilience. More than $1 million in grant funding has been distributed to organizations worldwide, 89% of grantees report improved impact delivery and more than 100 education and employability programs have been funded.

The Elbas’ campaigns and humanitarian work reflect a shared commitment to addressing the root causes of poverty. By combining their public platform with direct investment in organizations working on hunger, health and youth empowerment, they continue to contribute to global efforts to reduce poverty and food insecurity.
