Los Angeles– UNICEF, or the United Nations Children’s Fund, works around the world to help better children’s lives through health care, nutrition, emergency relief, and education. UNICEF wants to protect children’s basic human rights no matter their location or background. Children can easily die due to malnutrition or starvation. The U.S. supports UNICEF through fundraising and advocacy in order to ensure that no children die from causes that are preventable, and that every child is safe and healthy. Part of a child’s health, and a preventable cause of death, is the elimination of world hunger. One of UNICEF’s recent initiatives is in the name of elimination of hunger.
Ewan McGregor is one actor who supports UNICEF’s initiative to end world hunger. He has officially supported a mass anti-hunger protest that will occur in London on June 8th, 2013. There is going to be a protest that will occur during a meeting of Prime Minister David Cameron, where the focus of discussion will be the world’s hunger crisis. This meeting is in preparation for the G8 Summit. Ewan McGregor wants to make sure that the prime minister knows how important it is to end world hunger, and to make sure that change is made. Recently, Ewan McGregor has tweeted, “A big Sunday shout out to everyone living #belowtheline to raise money for UNICEF this week. Thank you so much!” This tweet reflects his desire to end world hunger by supporting UNICEF, and supporting the “below the line” initiative, which will be discussed momentarily.
Ewan McGregor has also linked to “The Big IF London event” on his Twitter account. This event merely wants to bring attention to the idea that there would be enough food for everyone in the world if the powerful countries, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, commit to making a change. He has already been a UNICEF UK Ambassador since 2004, showing that he is committed to a difference, and committed to UNICEF. Overall, Ewan McGregor wants his fans to take part in the anti-hunger protest on June 8th, because the more people show up, the more the world powers and country officials will take notice and make a positive change.
Ben Affleck has also committed himself to the UNICEF initiative to end world hunger. He has committed to live on $1.50 a day in order to bring attention to the plight of world hunger and world poverty. He is just one of thousands of world participants taking part in the initiative mentioned earlier, titled the “Live Below the Line Challenge.” It is meant to raise awareness on the 1.4 billion people that are forced to live on $1.50 a day. Nearly 20,000 people participated in this challenge this year. The shopping list generally sticks to generic food such as pasta, bread, and oats. Ben Affleck, in particular, wants to raise awareness of the displaced people living in eastern Congo who are in desperate need of food, money, and help. This follows his previous support of the Eastern Congo Initiative in 2010 that he helped found. This is a group that attempts to bring development opportunities to the people of that region both economically and socially.
Overall, Ewan McGregor and Ben Affleck are only two participants in a much larger movement to end world hunger, and they encourage their fans to join the fight in order to create a better future.
