BURBANK — Popular talk show host Ellen DeGeneres is well-known for her support of a large number of charities and causes. Ranging from support for animal organizations, such as the Gentle Barn, to charities such as Habitat for Humanity, DeGeneres is a cheerful giver. Most recently, the talk show host decided that the gaming world offered a lucrative opportunity to raise money for the underprivileged.
According to Variety magazine, DeGeneres teamed up with the mobile game studio ‘Seriously’ as well as 20 of the most influential YouTube and social media stars in order to raise $250,000 through the game “Best Friends: Race against Slime 2.”
The money is intended to fund the activities of seven charities which include the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre, Hope for Holt, Charity: Water, Oceana, Malaria No More, War Child and SpecialEffect.
The competition kicked off on Dec.19, 2015 and ended on Dec. 23, 2015, with the winners being announced on Dec. 24, 2015.
Top grossing YouTubers such as Markiplier, LordMinion777, PewDiePie and Hayes Grier were some of the participants in the game.
The influential stars had the duty of assembling teams representing the seven different charities to compete in the game.
Drawing on a combined following of 100 million subscribers, the YouTubers posted videos on their channels informing fans about their participation and encouraging them to play the game to aid the cause. They also highlighted which charity they were supporting through the game.
Followers who played the game helped their teams to raise money and win by donating their defeated enemy slugs in the game’s limited edition Holiday levels. The aim of all the teams and players was to reach at least 100 million slugs by the end of the competition in order for ”The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to follow through with its promise of matching Seriously’s donation.
The game was immensely successful with players surpassing the 100 million slug target and donating 141,960,000 defeated slugs. The “Ellen Show,” true to its word, doubled Seriously’s donation of $125,000 enabling the initiative to reach its $250,000 target.
According to Wonderwall, DeGeneres announced the winners of the competition via Twitter congratulating Cincinnati Children’s Hospital which scooped first place winning $100,000. You Tubers Markiplier and LordMinion777 were also congratulated on driving the Hospital’s win home. Oceana and Charity: Water took second and third place respectively.
In the first edition of the game held in December 2014, Seriously donated a total of $50,000 to different charities.
