Angelina Jolie Urges Support for Venezuelan Children in Crisis

LOS ANGELES, California — Actress, filmmaker and humanitarian Angelina Jolie is one of the world’s most recognizable American celebrities. Jolie became involved in humanitarian work after filming the movie “Tomb Raider” and since 2001 and has visited and helped more than 20 countries in crisis. Now, there are several reasons why Angelina Jolie urges support for Venezuelan children in crisis.

Angelina Jolie’s Humanitarian Work

Angelina Jolie is no stranger to humanitarian work. She supports upwards of 20 foundations that work with causes of all types including abuse, education, health, homelessness, human rights, hunger, poverty, refugees, slavery and human trafficking, water and weapons reduction. She has three adopted children from developing countries along with three biological children with her ex-husband Brad Pitt.

Recently, Jolie visited Venezuelan refugees located in Colombia as a special envoy for the U.N. Refugee Agency (UNHCR). She spoke with Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez in Cartagena to discuss the crisis of more than 20,000 children who are in danger of becoming of stateless. This would result in these children not having access to basic human rights as they would not be considered citizens of any state. This is why Angelina Jolie urges support for Venezuelan children in crisis.

Colombia’s Aid to Venezuelan Refugees

Many countries have taken in Venezuelan refugees, but Colombia has had to bear the majority with an estimated 1.3 million refugees. Such high numbers of refugees have been fleeing from Venezuela because of the economic and political instability in the country that began in approximately 2010. Economists say that the collapse of Venezuela is the worse the world has seen in the last 45 years that was not a result of civil war. The longer the crisis in Venezuela continues, the higher the number of refugees escaping will continue to grow.

As the number of refugees continues to grow, it is becoming harder for countries like Columbia to support them and give them the basic human rights they need, such as education, food, housing and healthcare. During her visit, she praised Columbia’s treatment of the Venezuelan refugees as it is the biggest refugee camp the country has ever held. Jolie hopes to garner more aid for these countries, which another reason why Angelina Jolie urges support for Venezuelan children in crisis.

Unregistered Births

However, one of the biggest issues surrounding these children is the rising number of parents not registering their births. This comes from not having migration papers and from there not being enough Venezuelan consulates. These undocumented children are the ones most at risk of being in the situation of statelessness. An undocumented child that does exist in any government system cannot receive the basic human rights that the Columbian government gives to other refugees.

Venezuelan refugees are fleeing from a collapsing country in order to provide better lives for themselves and their children. Without the much-needed help and resources, these parents will have gone through the terror of fleeing their country only to end up in a similar position with their children not having the basic human rights they should have.

It is essential that the collapse of Venezuela be corrected before thousands of children end up in the position of statelessness. And when Venezuela does get fixed, it will be imperative that these same children are seen as citizens of their own country and heritage. The Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez and Angelina Jolie hope to influence that. Angelina Jolie urges support for Venezuelan children in crisis before it is too late.
