SEATTLE — The “24K Magic” singer-songwriter has rightfully earned his title as one of the most successful current musical artists, with unforgettable performances and sold-out world tours. However, his philanthropy also plays a significant role in his expanding career. Bruno Mars contributes to relief efforts on both global and national standings as seen in his generous donations to Typhoon Yolanda victims in the Philippines, Flint’s ongoing water crisis and working relationship with Global Poverty Project.

In March 2014, Mars donated $100,000 to Typhoon Yolanda victims. The funds went toward medical assistance to children affected by Yolanda through feeding programs, scholarships, stress-debriefing programs and disaster preparedness workshops.

In addition to global causes, Mars contributes to relief efforts within the United States. In August, Bruno Mars donated $1 million in aid to Flint, Michigan in the wake of the city’s water supply contamination. The crisis began in 2014 when residents found high levels of bacteria, disinfectant and lead in the water after the city’s supply source switched from the Detroit river to the Flint river as part of a cost-saving initiative. As a result, approximately 100 cases of Legionnaires’ disease broke out, resulting in numerous deaths.

Regarding the situation, Mars stated, “I’m very thankful to the Michigan audience for joining me in supporting this cause. Ongoing challenges remain years later for Flint residents, and it’s important that we don’t forget our brothers and sisters impacted by this disaster. As people, especially as Americans, we need to stand together to make sure something like this never happens in any community ever again.”

Mars contributes to relief efforts by partnering with organizations like The Global Poverty Project among many other participating artists. Through the Global Citizen Tickets Initiative, The Global Poverty Project empowers social activism with concert tickets. By fulfilling various social actions, ranging from signing petitions to calling their representatives, music fans can earn points to win free tickets to concerts. Mars supports this program and encourages people to take action and raise awareness surrounding extreme poverty, major diseases and education.

Despite his hectic tour schedule traveling from city to city, Bruno Mars finds a way to pay attention to prominent issues and extend his support. His notable acts of kindness inspire his listeners and make a significant difference in the lives of those afflicted by calamity.
